Penn Dixie offers tools available for rent. A set includes a 3.5 gallon bucket, short sledge hammer, geologic (rock) hammer, chisel, safety goggles, and knee pad. Rental tools are available at check-in on a first-come, first-serve basis. The cost is $10 per set, per day. Tools must be returned by closing to avoid a $100 replacement charge.
Penn Dixie is not responsible for injuries caused by use of tools. Staff will provide you with guidance on safe and proper usage of tools at the time of rental. Improper use of tools is hazardous and prohibited; those misusing tools will be asked to leave. Goggles must be worn whenever tools are in use. Guests ages 13 to 17 must be continuously supervised while using tools; guests 12 years old or younger are not permitted to use tools.
Frequent Questions
What happens if a tool breaks or is damaged?
If you notice that a tool is damaged, discontinue use and contact a staff member.
What happens if I misplace a tool at Penn Dixie?
If you misplace a tool, you can retrace your steps to locate it. The majority of visitors are able to recover their tools by traveling back through the park to previous stops.
Why is the replacement cost so high?
We purchase high-quality, tempered steel tools which are industry-standard for geological and paleontological field work. The price point is higher than typical tools.
What happens if I cannot find a missing tool?
You will be charged a replacement cost. Hammers are $35 each; chisels $15; buckets $10; knee pads $5; and goggles $2.50 per set. A complete set is $100.
Can someone help me to properly use the tools?
Sure! Speak to a staff member for assistance – that’s what we’re here for!
Can I rent tools for the older members of my group if someone is 12 or under?
To ensure everyone’s safety, professional tool sets cannot be rented to any group that includes fossil hunters age 12 or younger. Instead, we are happy to provide complimentary garden trowels and buckets for the entire group.
