Penn Dixie’s on-site tours are led by our trained staff and volunteers who provide age appropriate presentations on the history of planet Earth. An emphasis is placed on the Devonian Period and the 380 million year old marine fossils located on site. Your students will get the first-hand experience of encountering local rock layers, erosion, minerals and fossil collecting. All minerals and fossils found during field trips may be kept. Tours are typically range from 1-1/2 to 2 hours, but can be adapted to different lengths to meet your school’s needs.
Our group rate is $5 per person. One teacher/chaperone is included with every 10 registrants; additional teachers/chaperones are $9 each. This rate is based on groups of 10 or more when booked at least two weeks in advance.
We would also like to offer a personal tour of the site for any interested teachers. Tours would be free of charge and would allow you to further prepare your class before they arrive to the site.

Penn Dixie brings the outdoors right into your school and classroom! We offer interactive programs that explore the wonders in geology and paleontology and engage students through hands-on experiences. The program will allow your students to explore our Earth’s history by discovering the different organisms that used to inhabit our area 380 million years ago. We present our programs by using hands-on activities, inquiry-based learning and digital slides. Each student will also receive their own identified and labeled Devonian fossil. Our program usually lasts 45-60 minutes, but can be adapted to different lengths and topics to meet your school’s needs.
We are now also offering a combo programming package deal for your school! This package would include a discount if your school decides that they would like to receive both an in-school program and tour of the Penn Dixie site during the same academic year. This combo package could be incorporated within the same classrooms or throughout the entire school.
NYS Science Standards
For both our in-school and on site programs, we use Next Generation Science Standards while integrating in the Common Core Curriculum. Our programs address: Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity; The History of Planet Earth; Plate Tectonics and Large-Scale System Interactions; and Earth Systems: Earth Materials and Systems. The Penn Dixie staff is also willing to accommodate any program idea or topic that you are currently covering with your student’s which would allow us to further meet the specific needs of your individual classrooms.
