Visitor Information

Friday Arrival at Penn-Dixie
The visitor check-in shelter at Penn Dixie.

We ask that all guests please adhere to the following rules and procedures when visiting Penn Dixie. New visitors should read our frequently asked questions.

  1. View the directions and map to access the site. Penn Dixie can be difficult for first-time visitors to locate as our current entrance is located in a residential area.
  2. Penn Dixie is outdoors. We have five shelters, portable toilets, and numberous picnic tables and benches. Our 4,100 feet of paved trails allow for access to most portions of the site.
  3. Review our Code of Conduct.
  4. Review our operating hours and admission rates. Penn Dixie members may visit the site at any time, provided they sign-in ahead of time. Penn Dixie will be open rain or shine on public days. Dress for the weather.
  5. Contact us to book a school or group visit to the site at a discount rate.
  6. We recommend that visitors bring or purchase a non-plastic collecting bag, bucket, or gallon freezer bag for fossils. Small garden shovels or claw tools work well. Hammers, chisels, and pry bars may also be used. We recommend using safety glasses when pounding on the rock with a hammer. A bucket of tools — two hammers, a chisel and a pair of safety glasses — may be rented for a nominal fee.
  7. Thousands of fossils are lying on the ground waiting to be discovered! Visitors are encouraged to dig and expose fresh bedrock which usually contains the best-preserved specimens.
  8. Everyone may keep all of the fossils that they find.
  9. There is always an opportunity to find a new fossil, a new species, or unusually preserved specimen! Please contact us if you have found a rare or unusual specimen so we can post photos.
  10. Penn Dixie staff and volunteers maintain a clean, safe, and family-friendly environment for all those who visit. Since we do not have a trash service, all waste must be carried off site. Please recycle any bottles, cans, and plastic water bottles.
  11. All Penn Dixie visitors, including members, are required to sign-in at the site. This helps us to track the numbers and origins of our visitors to our site.
  12. The followed are not allowed at Penn Dixie: dogs; bikes; ATVs; littering; firearms; archery; hunting; trapping; smoking; and alcoholic beverages. Running is not permitted due to the uneven nature of our site’s topography. Visitors are encouraged to bike to the site and use the bike racks available.
  13. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food and drinks and utilize our picnic tables.
  14. Blasdell Pizza is the official pizza of Penn Dixie! Order from their location on 3904 South Park Avenue (716-822-1138) and receive free delivery to the site when you mention ‘Penn Dixie’ and spend $20 or more.
